Birmingham, UK Tackles Traffic with Smart Parking from IBM, Amey, and Streetline
January 29, 2013
Fast forward to just over two years later, and IBM, Amey, and Streetline are now helping Birmingham, UK in their smart parking endeavors. The City has over 1 million residents, which combined with 160,000 commuters creates quite the traffic jam that impacts quality of life, the local economy, and merchants.
As experts estimate that 30% of urban traffic is caused by drivers circling the block for parking, the City is using IBM Cognos Analytics and Streetline sensors and applications to see trends including hourly occupancy, occupancy by block, and parking duration.
IBM UK Smarter Cities leader Nigel Milton, who is aiding the project, said “this Smarter Parking trial, which follows close on the heels of an IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant, puts Birmingham one step closer to its goal to exploit the latest advances in technology for the benefit of its citizens and to improve city services.”
We love using the Internet of Things to make our cities smarter, and we can’t wait to see who’s next.
