Mississippi State University Addresses Campus Parking

May 13, 2013

If there was one unifying gripe that students have about their campuses (beyond the yearning for better food options), it would be the more often than not, painful process of finding a parking space. Today, more than ever, students are commuting, or residing and bringing their cars onto campus. This creates a high influx of vehicles during peak hours, and the perception of inadequate number of spaces on campus.

Why Cities Need Parking Guidance, Not Parking Minimums

April 3, 2013

Last month, Transportation Nation reported that Washington, D.C.’s Office of Planning may submit a proposal to the zoning commission recommending that the City do away with parking minimums. These minimums, which require residential and commercial developers to build-in a specified amount of new parking, have been in place and unchanged since 1958. Several other cities, including Portland, Oregon and many of the San Francisco Bay Area cities have either seriously reconsidered or abolished these minimums.

The world’s population is rapidly growing, particularly in urban areas. According to the UN, by 2050 69% of the world’s population (or 6.3 billion people) will live in urban areas (as compared to 50% or 3 billion today). In order to accommodate this rapidly growing population, cities must do some serious strategic planning both on the housing front and building efficient and sustainable infrastructure to support these residents.
